IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is the most widely taken English Examination which was established in 1989. It is extensively accepted and a highly reliable method of assessing an individual's understanding and his proficiency in English as a language. IELTS is jointly owned by IDP: IELTS Australia, British Council and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations through more than 800 locations in 130 countries. IELTS is acknowledged by nearly all Australian, British, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand and South African academic institutions, over 2,000 academic institutions in the United States, and various professional organizations. It is also a prerequisite for immigration to Australia and Canada. IELTS scores are awarded in terms of band scores ranging from 0-9.

Studying for the IELTS test usually involves a long course. The preparation time is similar to that of the TOEFL, FCE or CAE courses (approximately 100 hours).

IELTS recognizes both British English and American English in terms of spelling, grammar and choice of words. It also incorporates a mix of native speaker accents from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and US in the listening component.
